Pyle, Ernest
1900–1945
   Pyle was a famous American war correspondent who spent more than three years in combat areas in Europe and the Far East. Already a successful and syndicated columnist before the war. Pyle was stationed in London in 1941 where he covered the ‘Blitz.’ He went on to cover the campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and France. He also accompanied the assaults on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was killed by Japanese bullets on 18 April 1945 while visiting the island of le Shima. Pyle won many awards including the Pulitzer Prize for his vivid eye-witness accounts which concentrated on the experiences of the ordinary soldier.
